As we have discussed in earlier posts when using process color printing, the four pigments Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Key (black) are mixed to create whatever colors are needed for the print. Using basic color theory and an understanding of pigment reaction you can create quite a variety of colors.

The CMYK color model is subtractive, meaning the paints, inks, or dyes create a full range of new colors by subtracting (also known as absorbing) wavelengths of light while reflecting others. The colored inks act as filters between the viewer and light source that remove the whiteness. The opposite effect is additive mixing, which involves adding color to black (but this is not part of the CYMK model).

It may be confusing to consider it “subtractive” when you “add” proportions of pigments to get the mix. Just think of it as removing the whiteness of the background. The more you mix, the less pure the light. In basic color theory, yellow and magenta create hues of red. Yellow and cyan create greens. Cyan and magenta create violets. All three combine to make grayscale.

Consider that if you start with a color background as you might with digital garment printing that you will need different levels of each color to compensate for the difference. It may take some guesswork but eventually you’ll achieve the results you want. Look to a color wheel for help.

 

 

When people are talking about spot or process color printing, they are talking about the way in which the colors are mixed. They are different kinds of printing that may be employed by garment customizing places. There are advantages and disadvantages to both.

Process color is created when you mix the four colors together to get variations in shades. This allows for some freedom in color change and a bit of a gradient. Most printers use a CMYK configuration, meaning you get the three basic pigments cyan, magenta, and yellow along with the standard black. The K stands for Keyline, not black,  in case you were curious. Process color printing uses four plates, one per pigment. The design you want is divided between the plates by the applicable colors. They are then fed one by one in a printer. The plates must align properly to get the right results.

With spot color, a specific mix known as a pantone (PMS) is used in a cartridge and applied to printing. The advantage with spot colors is that they’re much brighter and more vibrant. Spot colors take care of a color at a time. The single color ink is applied to the press roller. If it’s one color it will have a single plate. If two colors, there will be two plates. The more colors, the more plates are needed. They are layered one-by-one. Spot color is best when used for printing jobs that do not require full color imagery.
